Eco Marine x Living Islands Movement Mui Wo Community Ghost Net Adventure Cleanup (Sep)

IMG_3152.jpg

In April 2020, waters in Mui Wo were unusually clear due to reduced boat traffic as a result of COVID. We were able to survey the coastline close to Mui Wo via snorkelling from Silvermine Bay to Man Kok Wan and discovered multiple ghost nets in shallow waters, trapping and killing marine life including fish and numerous crabs. In the following few months we took action gathering together community members as well as volunteers from all over Hong Kong. We cleared 100+ large nets as well as thousands of kilograms of rubbish from within an approximately 1km stretch of coastline from Tung Wan Tau to Man Kok Wan.

We are excited to continue this effort in 2021 with the focus being on general cleanups as well as recovery of additional nets found.

Our next action date is Sunday 19th September 2021 from 14:00 to 17:30 to take advantage of the low tide. We encourage individuals, families and kids to join! This will be the last of our summer kayak cleanups for 2021. We will focus on hiking to further locations after September as the weather cools down.

After the cleanup, you’re welcome to join us for dinner at Mui Wo Cooked Food Market from 18:00 to 19:30 in honour of Merrin who will be departing Hong Kong in November. This is OPTIONAL—please post a comment on the FB event if you will join the dinner so that we can make a reservation.

We are going to focus on two sites this time:

  1. Families, kids and hikers at Little Bamboo Bay and Pearse Point

  2. Adults on Kayaks at Man Kok Tsuen headland

There will be separate leaders for the two groups but everyone will meet at No Name Store at 14:00.

Kids are welcome! Kids should be supervised by responsible adult/family members and need to be able to manage the paved trail walk to Little Bamboo Bay Beach which is 1 km hike each way from the meeting point.

Eco Marine Hiking Adventure Cleanup: Earth Day

#ecomarineadventurecleanup #whatcanido

Hikers and families, to celebrate Earth Day in April, we are targeting to clean up a beach in South Lantau close to the Mui Wo Ferry terminal (1.5-2.0 km easy hike to the Cleanup Point) and we are looking for you to lend a helping hand for 15 to 30 minutes during your morning hike.

hikingcleanup.jpg

Eco Marine, founded in 2012, is a Lantau based organization with a mission to inspire greater appreciation and guardianship of nature and to catalyse action for integrating this mindset into all aspects of contemporary urban life. The Eco Marine Adventure Cleanup series aims to connect adventure sports, nature appreciation, and action on marine waste. Each adventure cleanup event combines a healthy and fun adventure sport, an ecological activity or challenge, and a coastline or in water cleanup. We target to engage diverse sports communities in the conversation about waste and challenge them to identify opportunities in their sport to tackle the waste problem at source.

Eco Marine is hosting a socially-distant hiking cleanup on Saturday April 10, 2021 in Mui Wo, Lantau to celebrate an early Earth Day!

Many of Hong Kong’s beautiful beaches are maintained and cleaned by full time staff to make them safe for us to enjoy. However, hidden out of the public eye, Hong Kong’s remote beaches and coastlines are filled with man made plastic rubbish that has washed ashore with daily and storm tides. Everything moves with gravity towards the ocean and any waste not properly captured on land flows into the ocean. Once there, it can wash up on any coastline. It is horrific to see a trash filled beach and at the micro level, this rubbish disrupts the natural habitat of many species ranging from crabs and molluscs to birds and fish.

Screen Shot 2021-03-26 at 4.49.37 PM.png

Event:

Eco Marine staff will set up a cleaning station from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Cleanup Point with bags, gloves, tongs and hand sanitizer and will give short cleanup briefings to participants as they arrive at different times.

Come join us at the Cleanup Point for 15 to 30 minutes anytime between 9:00am and 12:00 noon to help clean up a small portion of the coastline. Participants will conduct the cleanup in groups of 1 to 4 and we will limit total participants at any given time to comply with social distancing measures.

At the end of the session, Eco Marine will weigh all the rubbish collected to document our collective impact. We will also be engaging volunteers to bring suitable items for recycling to GREEN@Mui Wo

Prize:

Volunteers will have the chance to win an Involuntary Pairs Game!  This card game zooms in on plastic pollution in the oceans, making the magnitude of the crisis visible. It’s a dynamic way to see, understand and grasp the fate and implications of our plastic age.

Cleanup Point:

Small Beach around 1.5-2.0 km from Mui Wo Ferry Terminal https://goo.gl/maps/bwsYFLjSdQuNtuy16

Covid has turned every beautiful corner of Hong Kong into a local travel destination. We love seeing everyone fall in love with nature and enjoying the great outdoors! That said, many of us have failed to clean up after ourselves! After picnicking, camping or simply stopping to take a few pictures in many places in Hong Kong, we have left behind half eaten boxes of pizza, countless plastic drinks bottles, single use masks, plastic bags, tissues, straws, beer cans, beer coasters and the list goes on. This rubbish will eventually wash into the ocean during a storm, endangering marine life and polluting the waters.

Yi O Farm x Eco Marine Halloween Mangrove Cleanup and Harvesting

Screen Shot 2020-10-13 at 5.40.19 PM.png

Yi O Farm Cooperative and Eco Marine are co-hosting a mangrove cleanup and rice and or roselle harvesting event on Saturday 31 October 2020 at Yi O (near Tai O) in South West Lantau.

Over the past seven years the Yi O Farm Cooperative has been working with indigenous villagers on reviving local organic farming at Yi O. Currently the cooperative farms approximately 100,000 square feet of land, producing a prized organic rice crop as well as other plants including roselle. Outside of the 100,000 square feet of farmed land, another 900,000 square feet is managed by the cooperative for future farm extension and historical and environmental conservation. Yi O is adjacent to the coast with the shoreline made up of rocky coastline, small sandy beach areas, and wetlands—home to valuable plants like mangroves and grasses and numerous animal species with a few being herons, mudskippers and endangered horseshoe crabs.

Eco Marine was founded in 2012 and is a Lantau based organization with a mission to inspire greater appreciation and guardianship of nature and to catalyse action for integrating this mindset into all aspects of contemporary urban life. We are excited to have started collaborating with Yi O Farm Cooperative for a beach and mangrove cleanup + farm  experience since July 2020.

Rice is harvested twice a year at Yi O and is done by hand using a sickle.

Rice is harvested twice a year at Yi O and is done by hand using a sickle.

The mangrove area is currently in a terrible state covered with manmade rubbish ranging from macro debris (polystyrene containers, single use plastic cups, food wrappers, single use beverage bottles, etc.) to micro debris (plastic filament, broken down polystyrene and the ever present pre production plastic pellets). We are looking for you to lend a helping hand and to enjoy a fun and meaningful afternoon with us.

Event:

1:00 pm — Meetup point at Tai O outside this shop near the bus terminus. 俊興行, Tai O Rd
https://goo.gl/maps/Jg4zoPb94pLXkBkb7
Host Keilem (Tel/Whatsapp 63920336) will be there.

1:00 to 1:30pm — Take small boat (free) to Yi O and walk 10 minutes to Yi O mangrove area. Eco Marine will provide an event rundown, a beach/mangrove cleanup safety and how-to briefing, and distribute gloves and rubbish bags. If you have your own gloves and or other equipment, please feel free to bring. Some useful tools are tongs and scissors.

1:30 to 3:15pm — Work on the beach/mangrove cleanup gathering as much man made rubbish and debris as we can in the available time. We will also collect and separate some recyclables and items that can be reused at the farm.

3:15 to 3:45pm — Pack up and walk 10 minutes together to Yi O farm area and take a rest. The rest area has water refill and soft drinks as well as bathroom and simple cold shower facilities.

3:45 to 5:30pm — Yi O Farm Collective will teach us about local rice farming and harvesting. Depending on the maturity of the crop, we may have the opportunity to harvest some rice ourselves! This time we may also be able to harvest roselle/hibiscus blossoms.

5:30 to 6:00pm — Take small boat back to Tai O (free).

Eco Marine and TransLantau are co-hosting a plog: hike-cleanup-hike/run on Saturday 16 November 2019 at Shap Long beach in South Lantau. Many of you will have walked/run past this beach on hikes and runs and may even have used it as a check point during a race. The beach is currently in a terrible state covered with manmade rubbish ranging from macro debris such as polystyrene containers, single use plastic cups, food wrappers, single use beverage bottles to micro debris like plastic filament, broken down polystyrene and the ever present preproduction plastic pellets. This beach, adjacent to a wetland, is home to local buffaloes, birds and other wildlife. We are looking for a large number of you to lend a helping hand and to enjoy a fun and meaningful morning with us.

Registration: https://forms.gle/FpkBzbStZC41XG8V9

Event Schedule:
9:00 am - Meet up point at Pui O Public Carpark. Hosts Keilem (Tel/Whatsapp 63920336) and Sabrina (Tel/Whatsapp 51938707) will be there. https://goo.gl/maps/PQTE8rwewkYUkvUw5

9:15 to 10:00am - We will hike together around 3km to Shap Long beach (easy walk but with some small ups and downs).

10:00 to 11:30am - We will work on beach cleanup—gathering up as much man made rubbish and debris as we can in the available time and will also collect and separate some recyclables.

Eco Marine’s Artist in Residence Salome Tam will be on site working on an in-situ land/rubbish art piece and anyone interested can join in to help. In Woven Ashore—a conversation with the wrack line, we examine the lasting impact on the environment of our everyday choices and consider how our lifetime compares to that of the plastic items we use. What shifts can be made? What can be given new life? What does it all mean in the scope of stewardship?

Water refill will be provided at the beach throughout the event. Note there is a public toilet at Shap Long and there is one informal shop nearby that may or may not be open.

11:30 to 11:45am - We will pack up and finish documenting the rubbish collected.

11:45 to 12:30pm – Picnic lunch. TransLantau will kindly provide a free plastic free packed lunch for all volunteers including a hummus sandwich and a cookie. In addition, all volunteers will also receive a reusable soft water flask from TransLantau.

Eco Marine Adventure Cleanup is collaborating with The Green Race and Exchange and Empower for a coastal trail cleanup ‘plog’ on the eastern shore of Silvermine Bay in Mui Wo from 2:00pm to around 5:00pm.

The event will share a start and finish in Silver Plaza, Mui Wo with the Tigershead GreenRace 16km route and ploggers and runners will be able to cheer each other on! Ploggers will jog/hike as a group or in a few groups whilst picking up rubbish on the trail/shoreline between the race start line, Silvermine Bay main beach to Man Kok. We will then turn around and head back to the start/finish area for a total distance of around 7km. Ploggers are expected to finish at around the same time as some of the 16km race participants and can share the finish area, drinks and snacks provided by The Green Race!

As an extra incentive, ploggers will receive 50% off a future race entry (discount worth ~HKD250) to one of the short course races hosted by The Green Race. The event will be raising funds for Exchange and Empower using the Bravera platform. We strongly recommend that each participant raise a minimum of HKD200 with a goal to raise HKD8240 in total for the event. RECRUITING DIVE TEAMS NOW – please email ecomarine.hk@gmail.com if you are interested.

The Eco Marine Adventure Cleanup event series aims to connect adventure sports, nature appreciation, and action on marine waste. Each adventure cleanup event combines a healthy and fun adventure sport, an ecological activity or challenge, and a coastline or in water cleanup. We target to engage diverse sports communities in the conversation about waste and challenge them to identify opportunities in their sport to tackle the waste problem at source.

We will be hosting an adventure cleanup diving month from 1 to 30 September 2018. We are currently recruiting dive clubs to each participate with groups of 10 to 20 divers for this meaningful activity. Eco Marine will subsidize dive clubs HK$200 for each participating diver to help cover costs for this activity. We have budget for up to 100 divers on this activity. Eco Marine will provide a training/Q&A session for dive club leaders. Dive clubs will be responsible to organize and manage their own dives. We recommend that participating divers have minimum PADI AOW or equivalent qualification.

Dive 1: Nature Appreciation Dive
The dive club will work together with all of its participating divers to conduct a simple ecological survey of the dive site, with the objective to create a dive site drawing/artwork and photo album showing the following:

  • Site location
  • Approximate depths
  • Ecosystem – coral reef, rocky reef, mangroves, sand
  • Dominant substrates – sand, coral, seagrass, rock, etc.
  • Species encountered

Participants will use their skills and creativity to complete the above. The end product can be scientific, accurate, exaggerated, to scale, not to scale, artistic, creative, or some or all of the above. The objective is not to make a scientifically accurate map but for participants to notice and appreciate the ecological diversity and value of the dive site and to create something that is informative, fun, creative and unique to share with others.

Dive 2: Rubbish Challenge
Dive teams will work together to perform a cleanup dive. Participants should follow the cleanup protocol as briefed by their dive leader (dive leaders will attend a training/Q&A session with Eco Marine). The cleanup protocol will follow a simplified version of the Project Aware Dive Against Debris Protocol. This activity can serve as a good introduction to divers that may be interested to take the PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty Course in the future. Participants will weigh the trash collected and take note and photograph:

  • Most common type of rubbish found
  • Most interesting item of rubbish and why
  • Most dangerous item of rubbish and why

Tackle and Source Solution:
What can the dive club do to tackle the marine waste and pollution at source? Agree with the team on what this is and incorporate into your dive team protocol/routine.

Artwork, photographs and cleanup report will be provided to Eco Marine for sharing by 7 October 2018. We will host a casual happy hour and sharing session for participants in mid October where prizes will be awarded for:

  1. Best Dive Site Artwork
  2. Most Rubbish Collected (by weight)
  3. Best Photo related to Rubbish Challenge Dive
  4. Best Photo related to Nature Appreciation Dive
  5. Best Tackle at Source Solution

2018年9月1-30日Eco Marine海洋生態歷險清理活動 - 潛水篇!

現招募各潛水會!有興趣參加請發電郵到ecomarine.hk@gmail.com。

Eco Marine
